Not Trusting The Internet

27/06/2021 Leave a comment

A choice of two Costa Coffees in Newport. Their website says one is open and the other one is closed. First discovery, the open one is closed and only much later did I learn that the closed one is open. Also, the Internet was down in the John Wallace Linton. However, The JWL is getting a FTTC update. Which is good. On to the Pen & Wig which already has FTTC and still the best collection of Cask Ale in Newport. Huge tray of chips from The Harbour Fish Bar before sitting in the corner in Tiny Rebel Newport. Wales got hammered 4-0.

Three Years And A Republic

Really three years since my last visit to Barry? Well Fourysquare and Swarm can’t be wrong. The Sir Sam was full of people having their Saturday Breakfast and figuring out how to use The Spoons App. Which in my opinion isn’t difficult but it is rather buggy. Also it’s had the Full FTTC upgrade so the Saturday Wrap wasn’t tethered. The real reason for the visit was to have a look at Craft Republic. Impressions, close to the Barry Railway Station, pleasant ambience, friendly staff and a great selection of beers and other alcoholic drinks. Downside, the WiFi was down and the ThreeUK reception was marginal. However, all in all, a must visit.

Don’t Sit On The Power Switch

Don’t Sit On The Power Switch, if you are watching Wales in the Euros and it’s still the first half. I did and the projector went off. The staff and punters in Crafty Devil’s Penarth Cellar were not amused. I wasn’t too happy either. However it was a great sunny day. All of my drinks were uniques and Spoons (The Bears Head) had an excellent selection of cask ales. Chips and a Class 769 to take me there. Wales drew.

Garden – June 2021

Where April started, May completed and it was a cold wash out as well. June has actually introduced Summer and I find myself hoping for more overnight rain. So due to May, everything planted out is at least two weeks behind. The earlies are just showing the first signs of flowering and it’s out with the watering can every morning to keep things going.  The first of the bush tomatoes were planted out ten minutes before the video was taken and the Cucumbers will be following then spoon. The weeds in the garden are a constant headache and I’m pulling them up every night, not that you can tell.

Cardiff Like Newport

Summer and a pleasant train journey into Cardiff. However The Queen Street Costa Coffee doesn’t open until 08:00 on a Saturday.  Things aren’t back to normal at all. Also, the cask selection in The Gatekeeper is minimal. Thankfully Bubs came to the rescue. The Finest of Ales, The Finest of Staff and some kick arse WiFi. No if I could only get them to open at 07:00 and do Bacon Rolls. You can dream, can’t you?

It’s The Little Things That Matter

25/05/2021 Leave a comment

Like will the bus be on time or will it even turn up? Will it hammer down with rain? Will I have enough things to moan about? So, dry and the bus was on time.

Newport was, well mostly closed before 08:00, still repairing the fire damage and minus one Spoons. The Queens Hotel. I will miss it.

With only one Wetherspoon in the City Centre, The John Wallace Linton, that now is the earliest to open and that is at 08:00. All the coffee Shops are 08:00 too. Still not back to whatever normal.

And so to Breakfast. BrewDog and Bacon seemed to hit the mark. Ordered on the app and I didn’t go for any sauces. Full disclosure, I am a BrewDog shareholder.

And it wouldn’t be me with out a tech failure. Here’s a tip, if the app says the beer is out of stock but you can see it in the fridge. Always go with your eyes. Still AB InBev.

Next was the Pen & Wig, Newport edition. Great welcome and a LocAle brew that became a 1K tweet, which for me is rather good. Good to be back on the cask. CAMRA member after all.

You can’t just have Fine Ales even if it is a Welsh Cake Stout. You need chips and you need chips from the Harbour Fish Bar. By the way it nearer to the Railway Station than it is to any Harbour. Always a good weather discussion going on there too.

Had a booking for Tiny Rebel Newport and I was sadly 10 minutes late. No problem and because I was a single booking I was put in the corner next to the power, my favourite spot.

Ordering was either via waiting staff or via a table QR code which tales you to an ordering website. Second tip of the day, the table number is written on the side of the hand sanitiser bottle. He’s the cream of the crop an 8.0% ABV Apricot and Vanilla IPA.
